Introducing Shiriya Barnes!

Hi my name is Shiriya Barnes; I am a year 11 student at Kununurra District High School in the KEFL program. KEFL stands for Kimberly Education for life. This program is only available to year 11 and 12 students at Kununurra District High School. In KEFL we spend one day in the first term and 2 the next 3 terms at a school based traineeship at Business in our community, we attend school for 2-3 days a week and 1 day at TAFE doing a Certificate II in either community service, business, engineering or automotive.

For outdoor education this year we will be going out canoeing, kayaking and mountain bike riding. We will be attending a series of camps, some at the Gibb station and others canoeing and mountain biking. As a part of the program we will be doing our bronze medallion, our skippers’ ticket, senior first aid and our end of year WACE.

Our Certificate II in Agriculture we will be doing a welding course at TAFE to get our welding tickets. We will be going out to the Gibb Station to do fencing, castrating, branding cattle, cutting their horns and lots of other activities.

I was born in South Africa on the 18th of June 1998. I grew up speak English but mostly Afrikaans. I was at a Afrikaans school till I was 8, and then got home schooled English for a year and a half, before moving to Australia. I moved to Australia in 2009 with my Mum, Dad and younger sister. We first lived in Dunsborough for half a year then to Kununurra in 2010, were I started year 6 at Kununurra District High School.

I chose to do the KEFL program because of the variety and for the experience. It’s a once in a life time experience and I honestly feel so lucky that I got to be a part of this program, because I know that this program will give me a lot of experience and confidence that’s going to pay a huge part to my future.

The things that most interested me most about this program is the experience we get from our traineeship and camps, helping us become more confident in certain situations.

I chose Business as my field of employment because it is connected to what I might want to do as part of my future career.

My long term education goal is to ace my maths and English, get good grades in my end of year report and get the right amount of points to get my WACE certificate at the end of year 12. My long term career gaol at the moment is to get into the police academy in Perth and become part of WA’s law enforcement.

I don’t think there will be anything too difficult for me in KEFL. I love challenges and trying new things. I also feel very confident in the school work set out for me and I know if I put in a hundred precent effort I will get good results.

Safe to say that things are coming along rather smoothly for the KEFL crew. We have had an extremely busy couple of weeks with Group One completing Horse Riding out at YEEHAA with Kris Thomas every friday, and completing a welding course at KTI this week. Group Two complete welding in Week 9 and all students complete their Senior First Aid during this week as well. I completed my 4WD course through KTI on Monday and Tuesday of this week, had a lot of fun and managed to not get bogged at all. I have also completed Interim Reports for all students and will discuss individual student progress with parents/guardians at the parent evening on the 27th March. Our first trip out to a station is happening in Week 10, if the weather does not allow us access to Gibb Station we have some alternatives up our sleeves. Jesse Shaw left us last week and took up a full time apprenticeship with IBAC plumbing, we wish him loads of success in this toilet unblocking industry. Canoeing and Kayaking is going well - stay tuned for some videos and more photos from our excursions.

That's all from me for now - Over and Out!

Jesse Shaw - Full Time Apprenticeship!

Jesse Shaw Signing Out!!!

Last week I was offered a full time apprenticeship with IBAC Plumbing. After careful consideration and consultation with my parents and Miss Audas I have decided to leave KEFL and complete my plumbing apprenticeship. This relates to my long term career goal of taking over my Grandfather’s plumbing business in Katanning.

I would like to thank Ben Hay for the opportunity to go full time at IBAC and Ms Audas for putting up with me over the last 5 weeks. I am going to miss the opportunity to complete the camps as part of the KEFL team, but am happy to be entering the work force and earning money.
