Riley Piccirilli

Hi my name is Riley Piccirilli I am 16 years old I have a mum, dad, an older annoying sister and 2 dogs.

I chose KEFL because I want to do my traineeship in heavy diesel mechanics, I want to do my traineeship at Coates hire because they have a huge range of machinery and I am doing a Certificate II in Automotive at TAFE. When I finish school I want to work on an oil rig or on a mine site. I want to get a high B or A in math and English and improve more on it and I want to get an A in outdoor Ed as well.

I’m not really looking forward to having to eat cow testicals and then having to check a cow is pregnant. But besides that I am really looking forward to getting my Certificate II in Agriculture.

I am really looking forward to all the camps, the canoeing and working on the station and the mountain bike riding and working with all the cattle and riding the horses.

When I finish school (if my traineeship goes well) I would be looking forward to starting my life properly and hopefully getting a job on an oil rig or at a mine and work there for a few years and hopefully if I get the job I’d save up for a while and travel the world (mainly Europe). But the whole KEFL program will be a great experience.

Evander Mitchelson

Hi everyone my name is Evander and I was born in Derby Western Australia on the first on January 1999. But I have called Kununurra home since I can remember.

I want to be in the KEFL program because It will give me the opportunity to catch up on school work I have missed out on in the past year, also the opportunity to complete a certificate II in Building and Construction and a certificate II in Agriculture.

By the time I have finished my two years of KEFL and graduated year 12, I would like to either get an apprenticeship in construction or leave for Perth and start my own business as a carpenter.

It is obvious everyone wants to do well in their school subjects and aim for the highest possible grade, my goal is to just make sure I don’t end up with my grades averaging below a C focusing more on Maths and English. To achieve my goal I have to focus more on class work and bring my homework in on due date.

My goal for Outdoor Ed is to do my best at every challenge I am given. What I am looking forward to is going on camp and learning survival and life skills. What I am really looking forward to is going through all these new experiences like canoeing, and station work with my mates and also making new mates and memories along the way. The one thing I am most looking forward to is getting onto a horse for the first time and learning the ways of riding. The only thing I am not looking forward to would be, being in the heat all day.

Finlay Thorne

Yo my name is Finlay,

I wanted to do KEFL, because you leave school with two certs and your first aid and maybe even a full time apprenticeship or traineeship, if you haven’t been offered one before the end of school.

So in my family I have my mum, dad and two brothers, their names are Helen, Dan, Darby and Sully. I was born here in Kununurra and I have lived here all my life.

For my

 traineeship I am doing electrical, I will be working for TST Electrics. At TAFE I am completing a certificate II in Engineering. I would like to start an apprenticeship in electrical and yes I hope to stay in Kununurra when I finish school and for my apprenticeship, I may move after I have completed it.

My educational goals for this year are to get B’s in all my subjects. I would also like to finish my Certificate II in Agriculture this year, so I can start my Certificate III in Agriculture in year 12.

So this year I am looking forward to all the camps that are coming up, working and making money for when I leave school. Some of the things I’m not looking forward to this year is all the class work and working outside in this heat.

Colen Nulgit Checking In!

Hi my name is Colen,

I just started year 11 in the Kimberley Education for Life Program. KEFL is a school based traineeship program that allows me to gain employment when I complete year 12.

I live in Kununurra with my family, I’ve lived here for about 6 years but I am originally from Derby. I was born their but have done all my schooling in Kununurra. My tribe name where I am from is Gidja. 

I chose the KEFL program because I wanted to get a taste of what work would be like and what skills I need to develop in order to achieve in my work place.

My career goals; I am doing my school based traineeship at DPaW which stands for Department Parks and Wildlife. DPaW is where I learn about the different types of animals and the environment that we live in.

I don’t do training at TAFE because I do all my training at DPaW which is a separate training organisation. I am completing a Certificate II in Conservation and Land Management.

When I leave school I want to have enough qualifications to work full time at DPaW and join the Firefighters.

I’m looking forward to the camps that are coming up this year and the work I am going to be doing at DPaW and earning my own money. In particular I am looking forward to the Agriculture camps and the Outdoor Education camps. I am used to going out bush and living off the land – so this should be fun.

Josh Davies Checking In!

Hi my name is Josh,

I have lived in Kununurra my whole life, I am fifteen years of age and I have a family of six and I was born on the 8/4/1999. I am a part of the East Kimberley Football Academy and enjoy playing a wide variety of sports.

I wanted to join the KEFL class because you may get a full time job out of it when you finish school. You also get to go out camping with the KEFL crew and spend more time together so you get to know the people really well – like a family. The KEFL class has made school a lot more interesting and probably easier for me because you get a lot of help from all the teachers and everyone in the KEFL class.

My career goals: some of my career goals are to get a full time job when I finish school. I also want to open a goal saver account, so I can put money in it every fortnight so I can maybe get a car motorbike or scooter when I have saved enough money.  

I am doing my traineeship at the Department of Parks and Wildlife, I work every Wednesday and Thursday at DPaW, and my training day is on Friday. I think the KEFL program is a good place for me because I know a fair few of the people already in the class and we are already good friends. I’m doing a Certificate II in Conservation and Land Management and also a Certificate II in Agriculture. When I leave school I want a full time job somewhere that pays me good money.

Education Goals in maths – I want to get a B or C grade in my maths course.

Education Goals in English – I want to go for a B or C in my English course, I just need to work on my reading and writing and pass my OLNA tests.

Education Goals in Outdoor Education –I want to try and get an A or B in Outdoor Education, I think I’m fit enough  and I have good communication skills particularly with my partner Colen, the person I’m going to be working with in canoeing.

I’m looking forward to going on camps and having fun with all the other KEFL crew and getting to know the Wyndham kids, who have joined us in Outdoor Education canoeing.

Aidan Pascoe Signing In

Hi, my name is Aidan Pascoe, this is my first year in the KEFL Program and it’s already been great! Just hearing about all the cool stuff we get up to including the camps we are going on is exciting. That’s just one of the many reasons why I want to be in KEFL. Other reasons are the paid school based traineeship, less classes and great people in the program to work with.

I am the second oldest in my family of 4 brothers and 1 sister and I live with my dad, step mum and my younger brother since my mum and step dad have moved to Queensland with my baby brother.

Career goals for me would have to be finishing school and my traineeship, then moving on to a full time apprenticeship and getting a trade. I also want to get some certificates from the KEFL program at TAFE, the course I am doing at TAFE is engineering, this allows me to get more hands on work, rather than loads of paperwork and making a few projects, while also getting good at different types of welding projects.

In school I’m going to be aiming to get good grades in maths, English and outdoor education over the next 2 years. With so little time at school I am going to make sure I hand in all work on time and work to the best I can without distraction. I am looking forward to the next 2 years of camps and being with a good group of people, getting a trade and having great friends to do everything with, there’s not much I’m not looking forward to in the future just getting past any problems that may be happening in life.

Dillan Kuiper Checking In!

Hi, my name is Dillan Kuiper, I’ve just started year 11 & my first year in the KEFL program. I wanted to be in KEFL because it opened up a much more enjoyable way for myself to complete my final schooling years, largely as I enjoy a more hands on approach to learning, plenty of physical activity & hands on work, which I know there will be plenty of in these next two years.

My family consists of myself, my mother, Fiona, my father, Colin, and my older sister, Laura. My parents manage a local hotel together, the Kununurra Country Club.  My older sister, Laura, is currently starting her second year at university, undertaking a Bachelor in Commerce double majoring in Tourism and Hospitality management and Public Relations, she has never been one to do things by halves if you can’t tell from that degree.

I was born in Perth, and moved to Kununurra when I was only two years old, so this is the only place I have ever really known. I have schooled at Kununurra District High School for all of my schooling years, so since kindy, up to present day.

I like playing a lot of sport, i.e. soccer, rugby and occasionally AFL, basically any sport that’s offered, I’ll play at the time. My other interests largely consist of playing with lighting and sound gear, as I have been doing it since I was about 9 years old and have a bit of a knack for theatrical lighting and most technology in general.

My traineeship has been organised to be undertaken at C&S Jolly Electrics over the next two years. My chosen TAFE course is Engineering as it has some electrical components that will go well with my chosen traineeship, also because I enjoy building/making things.

Upon completing school I am yet to decide what I shall do. I am tossing up between an electrical apprenticeship, or to apply to the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA for short), to do an Advanced theatrical lighting production & design course double majoring in production management services. Before doing that though I would love to go on a gap year and travel somewhere nice and cold, where I can snowboard as much as I wish, probably somewhere like Canada or somewhere in Europe.

For this year I hope to complete the year with high grades in Maths, English, and Outdoor Education, hopefully a minimum of a B in each, an A would be awesome though. To generally improve upon my grades from last year would be great.

I’m looking forward to most of this year, mainly for myself I’m looking forward to enjoying school for the first time in years, I think that will be the best thing for me. I’m also looking forward to all of the hands on work, I can’t stand sitting at a desk for hours doing bookwork, so it’s basically like torture for my mind, so all the hands on work will keep me focused. What I’m not looking forward to doing the pregnancy testings on the cows, personally having my arm inside a cow is not my ideal way to spend my time, for obvious reasons. Also the pain I’ll be in after the Outdoor Ed trips won’t be the best, so I’m not looking forward to that so much.
